Born posthumously, Petre succeeded to his father’s honours at birth. As a minor he was unable to sit in Queen Anne’s last Parliament but would in any case have been disabled by his catholicism. His short life was dominated by his devotion to the cultivation of plants, especially trees, and to garden design; what political influence he had as an adult will be covered in the next part of this work.
